HERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXTEND YOUR CLASSROOM BEYOND THE WALLS OF YOUR SCHOOL
"Teaching
with Hillsborough's Historic Sites" is a curriculum-based, multidisciplinary heritage education program for teachers
and students that uses local history and
the historical and cultural resources in
the community to assist you in meeting your teaching objectives.
Think of historic Hillsborough as a SCHOOL
and its historic sites as CLASSROOMS.
"Teaching
with Hillsborough's Historic Sites:"
- A collection of unique units, designed by history and education professionals
- Tied to objectives required by the North Carolina Department of Instruction Standard Course of Study
- Covers Arts education, mathematics, English/language arts, science, social studies, computer/technology skills and information skills
- Includes pre- and post- visit lessons that revolve around interactive field studies at specific historic sites.
PICK & CHOOSE one, two or all of the units to enhance your classroom studies
You can elect to use one or all of
the units in "Teaching
with Hillsborough's Historic Sites." When used together,
the units give a comprehensive overview of 400 years of piedmont North Carolina history
and cover a significant number of Standard Course of Study objectives.
TAKE A TOUR of our "CLASSROOMS"
"Passages to the Past"
Beginning with
the Orange County Historical Museum, students become junior curators
and "geometric" artists as
they learn about the pre-European settlement and colonial periods.
On-Site Activities include:
- Native American Artifact Identification
- Creating Colonial Quilt Squares
"Then and Now"
The years just before
the Civil War come to life at
the Burwell School Historic Site, where among other activities, students in representative articles
of clothing participate in period lessons in
the original 1837 school building.
On-Site Activities include:
- Burwell Residence Tour
- A Lesson at the Burwell School
- Games on the Grounds
"Times Is Powerful Hard"
Students construct
their very own community and record its history during
the Reconstruction period (1865-1877) through a variety of lessons and activities at
the Hughes Academy.
On-Site Activities include:
- Mix-n-Match - Reconstruction Society
- Music, Step, and Poetry - Living Reconstruction Through Art
A Teacher’s Resource Guide on CD is available to teachers. The CD contains lesson plans for
the pre-and post-visit activities associated with
the heritage education units listed above. The activities are design to prepare
and enhance
the students’ knowledge and experience during
the on-site field study. The CD also has information about outreach programs, children’s
thematic tours,
and Building ABCs, an early elementary heritage education program. CDs can be ordered through
the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough
and cost $3.00, plus $2.00 shipping and handling.
