Burwell School

The Burwell School, located at 319 North Churton Street, is a house museum that preserves and interprets the history of its antebellum and Civil War era residents. The Rev. Robert Burwell and his wife, Margaret Anna Robertson Burwell, conducted their excellent "Female School" here for 20 years, 1837-1857. In the mid 1850s the site resembled a small community within Hillsborough, containing several principle buildings and dependencies that supported the Burwell family, students and slaves.

Today visitors to the site see the Burwell's home - restored to its appearance during the Burwell period. The site also contains the two-room brick Music Building where the first school was held and the brick Necessary, both restored. Old fashioned gardens, sugar maples, lindens, sycamores, and lily-of-the-valley beds grace the two-acre site.

The Burwell School is open to the public year-round, Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Burwell School Historic Site offers free docent-led and self-guided tours, a variety of cultural events, and engaging and innovative heritage education programs for children and young adults.
