Revolutionary War Living History Day

Every year, the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough invites the public to experience the local history of the American Revolution with a day of family-friendly events. With live reenactors, dancers, historic tours, interactive activities, and collaborative events throughout town, this is a day all can enjoy.

Revolutionary War Living History Day focuses on Hillsborough’s unique role in the American Revolution, recalling the occupation of Hillsborough by British General Lord Charles Cornwallis and his 1,900-man army on February 20th, 1781.

The Dickson House (Hillsborough Visitor Center) – 150 E King

Get ready for an exhilarating journey back in time as The Dickson House and Hillsborough Visitor’s Center play host to a dazzling array of activities! Immerse yourself in the past with Historic Interpretations, where period cooking, clothing, and sewing demonstrations will transport you to the Revolutionary era. Brace yourself for the thunderous sound of muskets as Redcoat reenactors bring history to life with fiery demonstration firings, giving you a firsthand look at military practices of the time. Demonstrations are done by The 23rd Regiment of Foot, Royal Welch Fusiliers in America.

But that’s not all! Renowned author Suzanne Adair will grace the event, offering her captivating Revolutionary War Era fiction books for those hungry for even more stories from the period. Dive into creativity at the Daughters of the American Revolution National Headquarters doll-making tables or embark on an enlightening journey with Revolutionary War Walking Tours. Tickets for tours can be purchased here. This event promises a diverse and educational experience for attendees of all ages, ensuring that history comes alive in the most vibrant and engaging way possible!

The Burwell School Historic Site – 319 N Churton

Get hands-on at the Burwell School Historic Site with immersive dance performances, an ax-throwing station, quill and ink writing activities, and lively fife and drums demonstrations hosted by Camp Flintlock. Explore the historic house on a guided tour, delving into the lives of those who played pivotal roles in shaping Hillsborough’s history, including Elizabeth Keckly and the Burwell family.

Orange County Historical Museum – 201 N Churton

General Cornwallis is back in Hillsborough, and this time, he’s occupying the Orange County Historical Museum! Stop by the Museum from 11 AM until 2 PM for a meet-and-greet with Cornwallis (as portrayed by first-person interpreter Taylor Osborne). Ask him your pressing questions and chat about the American Revolution while sipping on some authentic British tea.

Occaneechi Replica Village – 140 E Margaret Lane

Join us at the Occaneechi Indian Village to view traditional cooking demonstrations, pine needle basket making, and the trading of pelts—a hallmark of Occaneechi culture along the Great Trading Path which ran through Hillsborough. Immerse yourself in a day of educational experiences, showcasing the rich heritage and skills that have defined the Occaneechi people

Scholarly talk with Lawrence Dunmore III at the Village – 11am & 1pm

Just outside of the palisade, scholar and OBSN member Lawrence Dunmore III will give an engaging talk on the Occaneechi people’s involvement in the Revolutionary War. Attendees can expect an insightful exploration of historical records and research as Dunmore unveils the contributions of the Occaneechi community to the Revolutionary War effort. He will illuminate the pivotal roles played by community members, providing a unique perspective on their significance in shaping the course of American independence.
